In the Octalysis Framework, Core Drive 6: Scarcity & Impatience is the engine of action. It is the “Limited Time Offer!” that makes you buy the shoes, or the 10-second countdown that makes you click “Continue” in a video game.
It is incredibly effective at driving short-term bursts of speed.

Because of this effectiveness, well-meaning managers often apply it to Operations. They institute “Speed Challenges,” timed changeovers, or gamified “races” to complete maintenance tasks. They believe they are optimizing efficiency.
In reality, they are manufacturing risk.
When you introduce artificial urgency into a safety-critical environment, you are not speeding up work; you are shutting down the parts of the brain responsible for caution. Here is why the “Ticking Clock” is the most dangerous mechanic in your toolkit.
The Psychology: Cognitive Tunneling and The “Speed-Accuracy Trade-off”
The human brain has a limited bandwidth for processing information. When we are placed under time pressure, the brain enters a state known as Cognitive Tunneling.
To process the “threat” of the ticking clock (CD6), the brain sheds peripheral information to focus entirely on the immediate task of “finishing.”
In an office, this might mean a typo in an email. In a factory or on a rig, the “peripheral information” the brain ignores might be the faint smell of a gas leak, the slight vibration of a loose bolt, or the tag on a lockout/tagout station.
By gamifying speed, you are chemically inducing a state where operators are physiologically incapable of situational awareness. You are pushing them to the far right of the Yerkes-Dodson Curve (see chart above), where increased anxiety causes performance to plummet into errors.
The Culture: “Safety First” (Unless We’re Behind Schedule)
Culture is not what you write on the walls; it is what you reward.
If you have a giant banner that says “Safety First,” but your gamified leaderboard awards double points for the team that finishes the shift fastest, your culture is a lie.
Artificial urgency sends a clear, unspoken signal to the workforce: Production > Safety.
When “Speed Runs” become the gamified norm, safety protocols are reframed as “obstacles” to the win condition. A culture of impatience takes root. Operators who take the time to double-check a reading are teased for being “slow” or “killing the streak.” The social capital shifts to the risk-takers—the “cowboys” who can bypass the rules and get the job done in record time.
This erodes the authority of the Safety Department. The Safety Officer becomes the villain who ruins the “game” by blowing the whistle, further isolating safety from operations.
The Cheating: The Art of “Pencil Whipping”
If you tell a human, “Check these 50 safety valves in 10 minutes to win,” they will not check the valves. They will check the boxes.
In the industry, this is known as “Pencil Whipping.”
Artificial urgency guarantees that documentation becomes a work of fiction.
- The Cheat: An operator stands at a single location and blindly ticks “Pass” on a digital checklist for equipment across the entire plant, just to beat the timer.
- The Consequence: The system thinks the plant is safe because the data says so. Management is happy with the “record-breaking efficiency.” But the physical reality of the plant has degraded.
The gamification has incentivized the falsification of safety data. You haven’t made the inspection faster; you’ve just made the inspection imaginary.
Conclusion: Respect the Pause
Scarcity and Impatience (CD6) belong in marketing, sales, and perhaps light admin tasks. They have no place in safety-critical operations.
Safety requires the opposite of urgency. It requires deliberateness. It requires the psychological permission to stop, look, and think.
If you want to gamify safety, do not reward speed. Reward the catch. Reward the pause. Reward the operator who stops the entire production line because they heard a funny noise. That costs you time today, but it saves you a catastrophe tomorrow. Remove the ticking clock, and give your team the time to be safe.
